About Us

The Mission of the Parish Library is to provide a resource of publications and electronic materials for the Greek Orthodox community of St. Demetrios, the westshore community and educational institutions to enable them to learn and further educate themselves about the Greek Orthodox Church, Greek culture and our ancient and modern Greek history.

In 1999, the Library Committee transformed the Parish Library. It was refurbished by obtaining furniture to provide a beautiful and comfortable public area for reading or watching videos and DVDs.

The collection was expanded for our youth and adults with lots of new books, videos, DVDs, audio tapes, magazines and CDs that meet the needs and interests of the St. Demetrios Community. All this was made possible by donations from parishioners and church organizations. The Ladies Philoptochos Society donates funds on an annual basis. The Parish Council and the St. Demetrios Trust also provide funding as needed while our priest offers guidance as required.

The Parish Library offers the following services:

  • Supplementary materials to Sunday School & Greek School
  • Purchasing books to assist with teaching of the themes of Vacation Church School
  • Selects books and videos in both the English and Greek languages for young and older children that serve to stimulate the imagination while teaching moral lessons and Biblical truths.
  • Offering "Showtime" and "Storytime" for children following the Divine Liturgy, during coffee hour
  • Providing books and videos for the Bible Study
  • Maintaining a broad collection for adults in both English & Greek:
    • Religion: Bible · Church Doctrine/History · Devotional · Pastoral · Comparative Religion (Other denominations, Judaism, etc.)
    • Philosophy
    • Ethics
    • Psychology
    • Social Science
    • Language
    • Fine Arts
    • Recreation
    • Literature
    • Geography
    • History
    • Biography
    • Fiction

Throughout the year, the Library holds contests for the children, encouraging them to visit the Library. Winners receive gift certificates for local bookstores.

Our library can grow with financial donations. The donations are lasting and useful memorials of family members or friends, as are gifts of special occasions, as children's birthdays, anniversaries and holiday gifts. Checks should be made out to St. Demetrios Library and mailed to the church.
