Conversion

  • Baptized Christians are generally received through the Sacrament of Chrismation. The process of joining the church varies according to each person's situation and circumstances. In general, the Orthodox Church does not re-baptize a Christian who has already been baptized in the Roman Catholic Church or in a mainline Protestant church. The key criterion is that the baptism was done by sprinkling or immersion in water and by invoking the Trinity (i.e, in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). Proof of baptism, i.e. a certificate or parental verification is also required. The Orthodox Church does not accept non-trinitarian baptisms, such as baptisms performed by Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons, or Oneness Pentecostals. An initial consultation is done with the Priest by appointment and then, a method of preparation for the Chrismation is discussed. Attending a series of Catechism Classes is also required.

  • In many cases, the person converting to orthodoxy (also known as a catechumen) will be received into the Orthodox Church in a prayer service conducted by a Priest or Bishop. A confession of faith is made by professing the Nicene Creed, followed by professing the Seven Ecumenical Councils. Brief information on the Seven Ecumenical Councils can be found in this video. The catechumen is then anointed with Holy Chrism, a fragrant oil that has been prayed over and blessed to bring the Holy Spirit upon him. The catechumen will be anointed at least on the face and hands. He is finally given Holy Communion during the next Divine Liturgy.
